Wide Angle Searches on the Web: This concept uses three approaches -
1) a list of search engines; 2) metasearch tool; 3) comprehensive searcher.
Here are some examples of 1): Lists of search engines
The All-in-One Search Page
lists 200 search tools.
Here you search several engines, and your request if formatted to that
engine's needs. A very user-friendly list, The
Configurable Unified Search Index (CUSI)means you only need to become
familiar with one search format and enter a particular search only one time.
This site is visited by high education users and is targeted to professors
and students. On World
of Research, John Cook has gathered more than a hundren items.
A rather new and amazing list, Internet
Sleuth focuses not on search engines - though some are listed - but on
searchable, stand-alone databases; links to more than a thousand!!
A New Search Engine with 208 million documents in their database as of
12/29/95 is INKTOMI, "Ink to
Me".
2) - Metasearch tools
A Metasearch engine does not maintain its own database of Web resources,
but submits a request simultaneously to several other Web engines and/or
directories. Here are THREE examples
1] Search EIGHT other search tools: Excite, Galaxy, InfoSeek, Inktomi,
Lycon, OpenText, WebCrawler, and Yahoo on MetaCrawler;
each engine is given a limited response time, and limited
geography/organization (you select).
2] All the engines of "MetaCrawler" are used by SavvySearch,
but the display can be in several languages.
3] Based in Italy, a recent addition is USE
IT!,featuring a number of international search tools. You may choose to
recieve less than or more than 20 databases. The best way to search is with
a single word.
Yahoo Internet Life recommends Inference
Find, commenting "This excellent metacrawler groups results into
relevant subject headings" (Aug. 1998 Issue) (added 7/17/98)
Finally, a "question-smart" search engine, ASK
JEEVES. which takes plain english questions and directs you to sites
with answers. (added, 9/21/98) SEE: Star Ledger, Sept. 21, 1998, p. 63 for
references and article on usage.
3) The comprehensive Search tool
This tool reaches beyond the Internet to include familiar, commercially
published indexes. - 1] Of all the wide-angle search tools, the broadest
scope of all is NLightN - it not only
searches through the Web, but also 500 proprietary databases; many of which
are available elsewhere for a fee - but here, no charge. If there is a
charge for a full text of a database, the range is from ten cents per
citation.
The lastest (1/4/97) search tool is FINDSPOTwhich
offers searches of WEB, USENET, LISTSERV, and more.
A NEW engine (5/15/97), LOOKSMART,
offers a great menu for finding items by category that is excellent for
young people and beginners. (See the iinteresting review in the Courier
News, Sunday, Aug. 31,/97 pp. H7-H9) [thought I like it too!]
Yahoo Internet Life issue for Aug., 1998 recommends Northern
Light as a search engine with nunerous filtering options for good search
focus (7/17/98).
