| Grow orchids in your basement! |
You do not need to have a greenhouse to enjoy orchid culture. Orchids will grow well in the conditions found in most homes. Orchid growing is addictive and as your collection grows space usually becomes a real problem. I address the space crunch by growing my orchids in the basement under artificial light during the Winter months and out of doors in the Summer. I currently use 8 inexpensive shoplight fixtures as my light source suspended from the ceiling rafters with small link chains. Screw hooks in the rafters are used as a convenient means of adjusting the height of the lamps above the plants. An old Formica top kitchen table and a metal utility table from Staples serve to hold my orchids. For lamps I use one 40 watt cool white and one 40 watt plant gro light fluorescent tube in each fixture. I have found Home Depot to be an economical source of both the fixtures and lamps. For power, a separate 20 amp line feeds a dedicated outlet through a timer switch. I use 2 heavy duty computer type power strips as tie points for plugging in the lamp power chords. This arrangement has worked out extremely well. I usually set the timer to duplicate the length of daylight and adjust it for seasonal changes.
