DIY Vent Rings

I have seen several decent aftermarket ring kits, but never really liked either the value of them, nor the fact that they don't cover the entire ring of the vent in one way shape or form. The solution for me was reading Gary's write-up on his procedure for Hakuna Miata

I wanted more the brushed aluminum look then a shiny chrome. I selected a satin silver type of paint from Home Depot and went to work on my gauge pods. Like Gary mentioned, its easy to break a few of those small clips when disassembling the vent rings, but its not fatal. I used a very think screwdriver to work around the vents. Below are two shots from the cockpit. I bit of care will prevent scratching them. Its hard to tell the difference between Gary's and my car from the wide shot, but I think the close up shows his having more shine, mine being a tad more flat. Check it out.
