Information on the M1 Miata
This section is primarily a source of info for folks who are looking for
general information on the M1 miata, whether they are considering purchasing
one in the near future, or referencing some technical specification.
Buying a car is a big decision, and you want to make sure you do it right by
getting the most for your hard earned dollar (unless you are a whining
professional athlete, then you just buy whatever pleases you and have some
kid wax it every weekend). So you perform your due diligence and consult the
Internet looking for other folks who bought the car you're looking at to see
what they think of theirs and would they recommend it. This page is my
answer.
My goal is to include most of the information I think folks who are looking at
the Miata are looking for, however the miata world is forever evolving, and
I can't keep up all the time. If you have more questions, see something I
didn't answer, etc, feel free to send me an email One
thing I will avoid is duplication FAQ information that is contained
on several pages within Miata.net pages.
However, here are a few quick FAQ items to get us up to speed
- M1 refers to the first generation Miata, produced from 1990 through
1997. Why so long? Ask Mazda. Technically, they probably would claim
they have been consistent with the japanese 4 year product cycle, and what
miata enthusiasts refer to as the M2 miata (99 and 2000 models) is really
the third generation miata. We don't buy it. No body changes were
done in 8 years of any significance, which is usually the defining
factor to the public when a car brand has gone through an iteration.
- 1990-1993 cars were fitted with a 1.6 liter DOHC 4
- 1994-1997 cars were fitted with a 1.8 liter DOHC 4
- M2 cars maintain the 1.8 liter DOHC, however the intake, cams and other
engine design changes are coupled with definitive styling changes to produce
a new miata
- There was no 1998 car. Beware of any ads for one

Here is a list of vendors I have used:
- R-Speed
Top notch customer service. Marlene and Joseph will take care of customers who are polite and work with any issues instead of letting off steam.
- Performance Buyers
I have had excellent service from PBC. I order on line, and UPS ground usually has it to me within 2 days (I am only 1 zone away from them).
- Finish Line Performance
Tommy, formally with Roebuck and PBC, has his own site now. As when I worked with him at PBC, he continues to provide great service and is a guy. Having so many good vendors actually makes it hard to order as their prices are often very close.
- The Dealer Alternative
Bill and Terri Cardell at the Dealer Alternative. I have ordered a few items from them with nary a problem...and spent countless hours drooling at the FM turbo pages.
- Brainstorm Products
I ordered my Stylebar from BSP. Also the vendor of the low-profile headlight kit
- Team Miata
Team Miata is a good source for interior items such as sill plates and VooDoo products.
- Mazda Recycling
Good west coast source of miata parts, which I have found to be cheaper then using Mazmart here on the east coast, despite a bit more shipping.
