Needlework

Sewing and needlework have long been a part of our lives.

Ken's grandmother sewed samples in the Garment District of New York City in the early part of the 20th century. Helena finally learned to sew after we got married. Nowadays, most of our sewing consists of creating square dance outfits - a skirt for Helena and a vest for Ken. Since we never have enough time for sewing, these creations are often the result of "throwing fabric at each other": We both lay out/cut the outfits, Helena stitches seams and Ken does the pressing. It really isn't quite as chaotic as it seems (seams?)!

Helena dabbled in stamped cross stitch in elementary school, but didn't become serious about needlework until joining 4-H in high school. There she learned to crochet and attempted knitting. Needlepoint became part of the repertoire in college, when her best friend introduced her to the art as a way to relax following stressful meetings.

This section features samples of some of Helena's projects, and links to our favorite sites.
