The First Oak Grove
- In the Cigel Randor campaign (DM: Mike), there was a
druid named Aerlen Glasslake (played by Bret). Like all druids,
balance-balance/nature-nature was his way, but
unlike others, he was an urban druid, specializing
in the city parks and beasts of the village.
Years into the group's journey, they were stuck. All leads had
failed, and they did not know where to look next for the sword
they were seeking. They asked everyone, and found no clues,
until one day, Aerlen met a wizened old troll in an alley who
had news. (The troll was actually an illusion controlled by the
NPC known as "Henny" and played at this time by Ethan).
The troll solemnly told Aerlen that the sword lay buried near the
largest tree in the Sacred Oak Grove. Not wanting to believe it, but
having nowhere else to turn, Aerlen went to the Sacred Oak Grove of his
order and asked others if there might be an ancient sword buried there.
Receiving no answer to the negative, he turned shovels
of dirt seeking a clue. This, of course, was not a proper action
for a true druid, and not even normal for an Urban Druid.
(Thus was born the phrases "to dig up one's oak grove", and
"private oak grove" to note examples of less-than-stellar roleplaying.)
